family law advice

Adoption is the legal process that allows a child to live permanently with an adult as their parent. By adopting a child, you enable them to have the same legal rights as if he or she were biologically related to you. If you need adoption advice, call us today.

An adopted child must be under the age of 18 when the adoption application is made and the child’s birth (biological) parents have to agree to the adoption, unless:

  • they cannot be found
  • they're incapable of giving permission because of a mental disability
  • the child's wellbeing would be jeopardised if they weren't adopted

To adopt a child you must be aged 21 or over and may be single, married, in a civil partnership, or unmarried (same sex or opposite sex). Adoption by single parents, grandparents and stepparents may also be possible under Family Law.

Either you or your partner must have a permanent home in the UK, although you don’t have to be a British citizen to adopt a child. Both of you must have lived in the UK for at least one year before you begin the adoption application process (read more about how our Immigration Law solicitors can help you here), which may require you to contact adoption agencies.
